Valdemossa
The village of Valldemossa is located at 700 m altitude in the Tramuntana mountains. The kings of Majorca appreciated this place because of the pleasant climate in summer. The high valley has been a popular settlement site since prehistoric times, Roman and Moors have left their mark. The most famous excursion is the Carthusian monastery “Cartuja de Jesús Nazareno”, where Fréderic Chopin and George Sand have spent their famous winter. Santa Catalina Thómas, the island saint, is from here, and Archduke Luis Salvator has built his “Miramar” in the immediate vicinity. King Jaume II built a palace here, which was further developed by his son and successor Sancho I, because he hoped to relieve himself of his asthma. Valldemossa is also home to the cultural center Costa Nord, which was founded on the initiative of the American actor Michael Douglas. It offers information on the nature of the Serra de Tramuntana, the mountains in the north-west of Majorca, as well as on regular cultural events. Specialties of the mountain village are a soft drink made from almonds and a kind of pastry made of potatoes.
Today more than 100,000 tourists visit the village every year.
